A lot of people are wondering if their iPhone or iPad is going to be able to run iOS 10. At the bottom of Apple’s iOS 10 preview page is the list of supported devices. Basically, anything powered by the second-generation A5 chips and the iPad 2’s A5X chip is the new minimum requirement set by iOS 10. For the iPhone, that means the iPhone 5 and newer.
UPDATE: Since this story was posted, Apple has removed “iPad 2” from the list.
And I’d be really cautious about updating the stuff that just makes it in like the iPhone 5 and iPad 2. I’m sure it will work but in the past the stuff that has the bare minimum hardware tends to be pretty slow.
It’s too early to update, but it’s also too early to worry about that. I didn’t ride my iPhone 3GS all the way to the last version to support it (somewhere around 6.1), but I did use it all the way to 6.0 without difficulty.
Just read up before the public release.
Am I missing something? I only see iPad 4th gen or higher. iPad 2 isn’t on the list. The keynote slide only had 4th gen or higher.
Agreed. The list shows an iPad Air 2, that must be what Shawn is referring to and confused it with the iPad 2 and subsequently the chip.
Shawn must have mixed the iPad 2 up with the iPad Air 2 and subsequently the processor.
iPad Pro 12.9-inch
iPad Pro 9.7-inch
iPad Air 2
iPad Air
iPad 4th generation
iPad mini 4
iPad mini 3
iPad mini 2
Interesting. Apple has removed “iPad 2” from the list.
Nope. The “iPad 2” was previously on the list. Since removed. Story has been updated to reflect that.
I swear when it first went up the iPad mini (i.e. the first one) was on the list, too.
It was.
Bastards. 🙂

Probably just as well, I was thinking of skipping it on my iPad 2 because I thought there is no way this could run well and then thought… well, maybe. Now I don’t have to worry about it! : )
Ouch.
The iPad 3rd gen is also gone from the list. The iPad 2nd and 3rd gen weren’t in the list shown in the keynote, but they were both on the website for a few hours before being removed.
Oh, I am. But I have an iPad mini 2 (the first retina model) that’s noticeably slower on 9.3.x than it was on 8. I’ll try a beta on it since I can revert during the beta, but I think this might be the last iOS update that iPad gets. Which is fine, honestly – it does everything I want and will for a long time even without updates. And hell, if it lasts 4-5 more years it will be closer to 10 than 5. That’s fine.
