Fortune:
Like many of her fellow attendees, Vijay has created a handful of apps for Apple’s iPhone and iPad. But the biggest difference between her and the thousands of other developers who will flock San Francisco’s Moscone Center on Monday is that Vijay is now only nine years-old.
Vijay is attending WWDC as part of Apple’s scholarship program, which gives hundreds of free tickets to developers from around the world who are creating apps for Apple devices. This year’s group of recipients saw the most winners under the age of 18, and a more diverse crowd than years past. Out of 350 recipients, 120 of the lucky winners are students under the age of 18. Submissions increased by 215% more than doubled from organizations focused on science, technology, engineering, and math.
She started coding at seven. When I was nine, I couldn’t even spell “programming”, let alone do it.
Some programmers never learn to spell programming.
When I was nine, they were still using the Babbage Engine.
Totally awesome.
Or learn to program. Maybe well get system wid print to PDF, back to iOS 7. That is the least Apple could, program. A new Mac Pro would give me some hope.
She is probably better than anyone or all of them at Apple, combined. She could even be as good a programming as the Woz, yet I think Steve Wozniak was more if a hardware guy, iirc.
And all the engineers are worthless. What have they done lately?
When I was nine there was no “computers” entry in the Yellow Pages. (And people used the Yellow Pages.) I remember being really excited the first year “computer dealers” showed up in the San Mateo County Yellow Pages.
When I was nine, I think we bought the new “Basic Programming” cartridge for Atari (maybe – could’ve been when I was 10), and I might have tinkered around with a few simple commands.
…but I digress. Good for her. A very motivated little girl. She puts lazy types like me to shame.
Haven’t you heard? STEM skills are far more important than all that fuzzy, liberal-arts “language” crap.
And she’s an Aussie.
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
