Bluetooth 5, the next generation of Bluetooth standard, will be formally announced next week, offering double the range and quadruple the speed of the current low-energy wireless protocol.
The announcement will come on June 16 from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, of which Apple is a member.
After all these years, Bluetooth is still a flaky standard. I know some people will say it isn’t, but we’d all be screaming bloody murder if wifi or ethernet were as unreliable as Bluetooth is in practice.
I half-expect Apple to announce their own proprietary standard a la Lightning/Airplay to connect their own devices. (I wonder how much of the underwhelming experience of Apple Watch can be laid at the feet of Bluetooth flakiness?)
Finally!

Just in time for Apple Watch 2.
I expect that there will be some announcements coming up (maybe this week, maybe not) that will include the necessity of Bluetooth 5 in Apple products. Some new feature that will require it most likely.
Personally I believe the problem with Bluetooth is the frequency that it’s forced to live on and SO many bluetooth devices and other non-tech devices that affect it’s QOS. No other way around that other than open up the bandwidth. (I am not an engineer). Just seems logical to the technology as I understand it.
