Amazon.com Inc is preparing to launch a standalone music streaming subscription service, placing it squarely in competition with rival offerings from Apple Inc and Spotify, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.
The service will be offered at $9.99 per month, in line with major rivals, and it will offer a competitive catalog of songs, the sources said. Amazon (AMZN.O) is finalizing licenses with labels for the service, which likely will be launched in late summer or early fall, the sources said.
I sure hope Apple has its shit together because Amazon is a master at the cloud.
It’s amazing how much lower the bar is for every other company vs Apple.
Amazon’s cloud player has been garbage from day 1. People bought music on Amazon (because they were undercutting everyone on price) and immediately moved it to iTunes. That’s how bad it is.
If it’s not included in Prime for free, it won’t have an audience.
Also debatable that they’re masters at the cloud. They’re just undercutting everyone on price, which they can do because hedge fund growth speculators are funneling unwarranted money to Amazon based on Bezos’ cult of personality.
Amazon just doesn’t provide a premium experience. Success with AWS customers and Prime customers doesn’t translate to other areas (Fire Phone). I don’t think there is any room. As a Prime user i’m certainly not paying them additional funds beyond my Prime membership.

Amazon may be good at hosting stuff for other companies. On the consumer side, not so much. They bundled their video streaming service into Prime and people still don’t seem to use it. Amazon doesn’t disclose numbers but all those “did you know your Prime membership includes free video streaming” certainly doesn’t look like it’s a big success.

I’m sure the Amazon service will be popular with Kindle Fire users, for whom Apple has not yet made available an Apple Music app.
But if it’s the same price as Apple Music and Spotify, and has essentially the same catalog, I don’t see any reason that anyone else would find it compelling.

IF they do something like Ultra violet, which tends to only make their suffering ‘customers’ ultra-violent, there is nothing to be concerned with.

Amazon may not actually care about a ‘free’ audience. They may give it away freely for a time. Amazon does have content and a clue, though they seem to fumble as much as Apple.

The tablets were at least OK, by many accounts. They are probably in a better position with Android, than anyone else – primarily due to the Amazon ecosystem (possibly similar to Apple’s). Even Samsung is worse here, though Samsung seems to be making strides with Tizen in their watches.
Amazon’s fire phone is probably more stupid than Apple Music. I wished I knew what those dopes at Amazon were smoking or drinking when they OK’d it’s production.

The record companies, being the whores that they are, will now create streaming licenses for anyone who will pony up. They do not want to repeat the mistake of downloads, where they gave, in their opinion, too much power to iTunes.
