The government is expected to allow Apple to open its own retail outlets in the country without any sourcing requirement for two-to-three years as it tries to work out an arrangement under which the Cupertino, California-based company will agree to local purchases once it gets a stronger toehold in the country.
This would be a foot in the door for Apple. Hard to imagine the government would force Apple to close all their Apple Stores once they are operating, especially since they would become a local employer and a shutdown would mean job loss.
I think its a good move for and India. Certainly going to irk some China made Android device makers selling in India.
Not forcing Apple to stick to the deal, can mean every other company setting up in India can follow the same path. It’ll put India in a tricky position.
A study of Indian government practices would suggest they’d have no problem shutting Apple Stores down. Furthermore, Apple does not have a history of rapid deployment of stores. In 2-3 years, they might have opened 3-4 stores at the most. Not hard to shut down.
Another example of a mature Apple being blackmailed to increase market share. So much for free trade.
Looks like the first stage of a multi-stage compromise eventually leading to Apple having a substantial manufacturing/retail/development base in India. Need more details about later stages to understand it well.
The first stage sounds risky for Apple as they will take a huge brand (and stock) hit if they don’t execute well enough to reach latter stages and have to fold shop. I expect the risk is offset by benefits that occur in latter stages that will certainly include tax benefits. Basically short term risk in exchange for long term benefits. Right up Apple’s alley eh?
If it pans out well then it may well become a new template dealing with MNC’s and FDI in India. Instead of thinking in terms of blanket policy, examine on a case by case basis and work out a balanced deal. Good on the Indian government for trying out new strategies.
