Apple now hides an app in the charts once you’ve installed it. Give it a try: Go install TV Pro Mediathek (VOD for German TV content) from the App Store (currently #3 Top Grossing in Germany) and then go back in to the App Store: boom – it’s gone from the charts and the next-placed app has moved up.
This tvOS top charts algorithm change even affects featured apps on the start page: TV Pro Mediathek no longer shows up in its featured slot on the start page of the German App Store once you’ve installed it.

We have confirmed that the same phenomenon occurs in the US Apple TV App Store using the AMC television network’s Apple TV app. If you download the AMC app, which is currently featured and ranked among the top free apps in the US, and then force quit the store by double clicking the Home button on the Siri Remote and swiping up on the App Store app, the next time you launch the App Store, AMC will no longer be on the Featured page or on the top free app chart.
This is an interesting experiment. Screen real estate is at a premium on the Apple TV App Store. By eliminating apps that a customer has already downloaded, Apple is able to present customers with more new apps. The change does mean, however, that the charts are not true top charts, but instead, top charts of apps someone hasn’t already downloaded.
I see the value here, both for you and for Apple. You get less clutter and more useful info in the charts and Apple gets more sales. But there’s some part of this that grates, just a bit, a sense that the top charts are not reflecting reality. Maybe we need an asterisk and a note that makes the situation a bit clearer.
Yeah, I don’t get it. They don’t do this on Apple Music, or the App store, so what makes Apple TV so special that you can’t actually see the most popular apps in the charts? I’m insecure, I need the validation that I picked the right apps!
Maybe they are preparing to do this on the other stores? It’s probably easier to roll it out on a platform with fewer users and work out kinks than drop it on all the stores at once and hope for the best. Let’s wait and see before we go batty.
Also, I would welcome this kind of thing on other services. I’m tired of seeing advertisements in Facebook and Google Adsense for things I’ve already bought. Doesn’t do me any good, and it’s wasted eyeballs for the advertiser’s dollars, too.
What you’re talking about should fall under “suggestions for you” or something like that. They can even make that the most prominent page. However, a “best sellers” chart should actually include, you know, the best sellers.
Considering how much developers complain about the best sellers list being fubared due to copycat apps and general gamesmanship, I welcome any changes that help remedy the situation. Anything that helps get other possible popular/bestseller apps up front in people’s eyeballs is a good change.
Maybe to make it better for you they can lengthen the title of the section to “Bestsellers You Don’t Already Have” but that seems superfluous to me, especially since it is still showing bestsellers.
This could be an awesome change, but, they need to fill in the bottom of the list with more apps. As it is now, there are 200 in each top chart, if you’ve installed 25 of them, you only see 175. You should still see the next top 200, giving 25 new apps a chance to be seen.
I think this is a great idea! I don’t care where apps are in the Top Chart once I have downloaded them. The whole point of the Top Chart is the discovery of new apps. This will give new apps a chance to be in the Top Chart instead of the same entrenched apps (that most people already use) taking up valuable space. Developers get expose, Apple sells more apps, users see more options, everybody wins.
All objections I have seen to this change seem to come from people who see the Top Chart is a scoreboard.
