Patently Apple:
The California Institute of Technology has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Broadcom and Apple (and Avago Technologies owned by Broadcom). The patent infringement lawsuit concerns Apple’s iPhones beginning with the iPhone 5, the iPad, MacBook Air, Apple Watch and more. Apple’s use of Broadcom’s technology is using IRA/LDPC encoders and/or decoders invented by the California Institute of Technology. In this lawsuit, Apple is drawn in by virtue of using Broadcom Wi-Fi products.

This week AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule were pulled from U.S. Apple Stores. Whether this is due to next-gen versions of these product arriving next month or complications related to this lawsuit is unknown at this time.

the AirPort stock issue is due to the FCC rule changes and/or new devices. I am wondering why other system company are not being sued by CalTech as well, Apple is not the only one to use Broadcom chips.
Just follow the money. Lawsuits cost money so it is not a good idea for a smaller fish to have too many ongoing. It is beneficial to go after company who can pay (if found guilty). If Apple is found guilty and pays, they can likely get payment from others without litigation given the precedent.
If the patented technology is an algorithm encoded in a chip, why isn’t that on the chipmaker’s head?
Because if Judge Linda Cote is on the case she will find against Broadcom just because Apple is mentioned as a sidenote.
