Apple is working on an AI system that wipes the floor with Google and everyone else

Siri is due for a big upgrade.

Apple now has the tech in place to give its digital assistant a big boost thanks to a UK-based company called VocalIQ it bought last year.

According to a source familiar with VocalIQ’s product, it’s much more robust and capable than Siri’s biggest competitors like Google Now, Amazon’s Alexa, and Microsoft’s Cortana.

“Wipes the floor” remains to be proven and we’ll likely see something announced at WWDC in a couple of weeks but this article points out that Apple develops “in private” for the most part. Those who doubt Apple’s AI efforts seem to forget that fact.

  1. Hmmm… Apple might be able to recruit the best designers and the best hardware people. But can they recruit the best AI people? According to articles I’ve read on Ars and elsewhere, the answer is kinda no. I’d be delighted as hell if they succeeded, because I’m very alarmed that the future of AI is Google’s data-collection monster. But, as you correctly say: “remains to be proved.”

  2. I sure hope Apple improves Siri, as (despite not having a clue about the other competitors), while pretty good, it still screws up too much.

  3. My experience with the various voice assistants (except Alexa, which I haven’t used yet) indicates they all have their own idiosyncrasies.

    There is a newer app-based assistant out there called Hound that looks promising. I plan to download that and try it soon (I’m in the process of finishing several projects before a move next week, so play time is at a minimum).

  5. This is as misleading as the original trepidations expressed by Marco Arment about Apple falling behind in AI. VocalIQ specialized in natural language processing. While that is an important component of AI, it is one of many important components. The most significant recent advances in AI are in deep learning. The most significant recent event in AI is not Echo, Siri or Google Home – it’s the total defeat of a Go master by a machine developed by the DeepMind team at Google.

    Google, Facebook and Microsoft have some of the best known researchers in this area, most of whom come from the Geoffrey Hinton tree, either directly or indirectly. It’s not clear who at Apple is in the same class as Yann LeCun or the DeepMind team at Google.

  7. Apple is no good on “big data” or “intelligent” data… or “pro systems” – though that’s a different topic. Apple should do way better … and maybe go back to semi upgradeable computers as well – modular even.

  8. It would be nice if the voice/AIs had some intelligence. It would be even better IF i could tell my iPhone to – turn on BT and connect to ‘car’ … or even have this do that automatically – some day, it should have happened years ago.

  9. I have seen nothing “deep” about AI or voice AI. Someday, this tech may actually work. It would seem the xSiri engineers are ahead. Apple is unable to even get “music” correct.
