You call this dark? I call it merely garish and stupid. On the principle that a society gets the government it deserves (case in point: Venezuela), if too many of us remain complacent and and simply “put up and shut up” only to “complain” about conditions on article comments and online fora, then, yes, this could happen. But AR COULD be a meaningful, beneficial, and controllable asset when done sensibly and in moderation. For example, for flight instruction and enroute navigational aids.

This is more than just garish, and it’s definitely not stupid. As far as the street-level consumer experience will be concerned, this is roughly what we can expect to happen to a worldwide population that has been infantilized into accepting every activity as a gamified incentive scam, as dictated by businesses who’ve been given free reign to control every moment of our lives.
Yes, vertical applications will make AR very useful. But the moderation you’re hoping for is already gradually disappearing. The camel will always keep poking its nose further into the tent.

You know less about me than you believe. I’m not saying I wouldn’t fight this. I’m reminding you that it’s already under way. You trivialized it, which would make it easy to ignore. That’s the opposite of vigilance.
But most consumers will indeed just accept this, because we no longer educate people to think critically. Most of our population won’t have the benefit of sitting at your feet while you pontificate in your recliner.
The “dark future” is massively stupid and massively garish. This cannot be over stated. Who said business had any brains? History shows they often had fatal blinders on… ignorance and arrogance and greed made for a bad combo – also lack of class and “social” does not help.
I doubt humanity has a whole ever though critically .. though some areas appear to be willfully ignorant.
The Blade Runner future was much bringer – or at least smarter – than, “this dark future”.
