Apple granted a cellular MacBook patent

Yes, please.

  1. If I could just “Add a device” to an existing data plan, this would be a total win. Another bill to pay does not excite me.

  2. Eh. I almost always have my phone with me so I just connect to it using Handoff/Continuity if wifi isn’t available.

  3. That’s what they call a “third-party opportunity.” There’s a great Mac app called TripMode that allows or blocks internet access on a per app basis and tracks how much is used.

  4. I don’t see Apple shipping a cellular capable Mac before they solve the problem themselves. This isn’t like the old days, where they’d buy a third party hack like a menubar clock or more capable Apple menu.

  5. Dubious.

I mean, the idea of Apple putting cellular into MacBooks generally.

Am I the only one who remembers when “Cellular modem in a laptop” was “a thing”, maybe 5 or 7 years ago? Dell would sell like five or six different models with a cellular modem.

(You can still buy a few from various makers, but they’re deeply, deeply unpopular – and for reasons and in ways that I don’t think “Apple Doing It Right” will fix.)

It died out, because phone tethering avoids the “yet another data plan” problem marcintosh notes below.

  7. Gah. Don’t make me get up and grab my iPhone…

It’s got per app controls, right? Yeah, something like that. But also with finer controls available to app developers (also available in iOS).

  8. Yeah, global on/off, roaming on/off, per app on/off. I think it’s fair to say Apple would offer those settings at a minimum. I just hope it’s set up like cellular iPads where you can turn it on or off, month by month as needed.

  9. Sounds right. But I think iOS also has API support for an app to specify that even if it’s allowed on cell, a particular request shouldn’t ever use the cell. I don’t think OS X has the same.
