Calling him “one of the last members of the original Siri team,” The Information reported on Wednesday that Darren Haas has left Apple for General Electric. He’ll join Steve D’Aurora, another ex-Siri team member who resigned from Apple for GE a few weeks ago.
The changeups also come a few days after a team of ex-Siri personnel unveiled Viv, a new, advanced virtual assistant that aims to offer functionality well beyond what Apple’s Siri can currently do. Demonstrated tasks include ordering a car from Uber, buying flowers from FTD, and ordering tickets from a variety of services, and offer intelligent, contextual responses, such as alternatives when a showtime for a movie is sold out.
This is very sad, especially considering what we’ve seen from the now departed Siri team and what they’ve done with Viv. These types of advances is what we expected Apple to do with Siri.
When does Eddy get his early retirement. I can’t think of anything under his direction that’s best in class right now.
Apple seem to be struggling to move quickly on ANY front right now – I’m a massive Apple fan but even I am starting to have doubts on the direction they are taking.
I say good for the ex-Siri engineers. When Siri was first acquired, it lost some functionalities. My (uninformed) theory is for some reason, Apple would not let them focus on the features they wanted to add. It’s also possible some members of the team were asked to apply their skills to other development problem at Apple, which wouldn’t be surprising — Apple has always so much to do, software-wise. Engineers gets antsy when they can’t work on what stimulates them.

This smells management and turf-related to me and if it is then Cook better put some heat on whoever or whatever is causing it.
Eddie Cue is definitely in the crosshairs as many things under his direction seem to be floundering.
It’s a lot harder to produce production ready systems that work in every possible edge case than to build cool, but fragile tech demos. The voice recognition and AI spaces have always been long on dreamers and short on practical implementers, so it isn’t really surprising people are leaving when confronted with the need for solid production systems.
I wonder how long the original programmers sat on their innovative ideas while working for Apple, with the intent to create Viv at a later exit. Original Siri shareholders, got $millions in the acquisition, but my guess, the brains of the operation got peanuts. Appropriate payback, methinks.
Since Siri was announced, it hasn’t progressed much at all.
