Before the introduction of Apple News in iOS 9 I was a big user of Flipboard. I’ve used RSS readers in the past but I’ve always liked the casualness of being able to flip through the current news and add stories for reading later. I was pretty hooked on this way of working and when News launched I tried it straight away, it wasn’t ready for prime time. It was slow and didn’t seem to update correctly but with iOS 9.2 it had a big update making it useable and reliable.

Must have opened it a dozen times since it was launched – just don’t get what its purpose is. I would rather just visit the websites I have set up in my favourites – after all most of the time the articles take you to the source site anyway. What am I missing?
That if you just go to the sites in your faves you only see those sources. News is trying to do what Zite and others did which is discover what you like and show you that even if the items are from sites you don’t know about. Ideally, it shows you not only stuff you likely would find anyway, but also enough new, interesting and surprising stuff that it adds value by not being just a list of sites you already know about.
Yes I understand that but I just seem to prefer to find my own sources of info. I have tried various apps like News but always seem to revert back to just using a combination of favourites and searches.
Ah, then you won’t find value in it. Me, I like the discovery/surprise aspect of it. It’s a little like Zite was before Flipboard killed it. I’m wary of living entirely in an echo chamber, so having something say ‘hey, look at this, this might interest you’ is useful to me.
