Moog’s Model 15 modular synthesizer, first released in 1973, can cost upward of $10,000. But Moog understands that not every synthesizer fan has a casual 10K laying around, so yesterday the company released an iOS app version of the classic instrument. It’s available for iPads, iPod touches, and iPhones that are running iOS version 9.3.1 or later.
What’s really cool about the app is how hands-on it is. Although the buttons are virtual, users actively participate in creating their music. They can drag cables around the board, play on the collapsable digital keyboard, and turn knobs. It’s a hefty app with a lot of simultaneous motion and sound, so Moog says it took advantage of Apple’s Metal API for smooth transitions.
Watch the video. Fantastic to have that distinct Moog sound. Looks like it is Midi-savvy, so you can set up the sound you like, then control it from a full size MIDI Controller. Nice.
Moog have got some really amazing synths in the appstore (iMS-20, Animoog). This is one area where the iPad really shines. Korg have got some good stuff too. And Propellerheads. And there’s Sunriser, and plenty more that I can’t remember right now.
You can lose a lot of time with these apps. I just wish it were a bit easier to hook it all up to a Mac over midi over wifi (I think it’s quite possible, but I’ve never got it working, and I’m not sure how you’re supposed to send the audio out of the iPad for recording anyway)

There’s a lot of decent link apps, or the simplest way always is to just (if the tempo is steady) set tempo at 120 etc export file as a few streams or one, import into whatever OS X or Windows music app you love at same tempo.
I think this one will go over straight midi but I’ll have to see later how easy this is, able ton link and others are brilliant though not iOS to OS X afaik.

Exporting tracks from the apps as stems definitely seems like the best way, but it’s just a bit of a pain — especially for people like me who are just messing around, doing it for fun. You spend more time trying to move files and get them in the right place than making music! Oh, hang on, that’s not too different to how it’s always been I guess, and even more so with real hardware 🙂
Post a link when it’s ready — sounds interesting! Are you doing midi stuff with Arduino? That’s always fascinated me, but feels like it’d be a massive time sink, so I’ve avoided looking in to it too much. Same with DIY guitar pedals…
I haven’t had time to play with this at fully but some audio engineers and musicians I msmtotbis app to bought it Instantly .. Tutorials are very handy because the average Person has no idea how to use the virtual circuit stuff properly without some help
You can trial and error but a good tutorial is the best.
Was that an autocorrect from audiobus? 🙂 I’ve got that, and it’s nice, but I don’t use it much, because I only just got an iPad powerful enough to run two apps at once. After seeing this post yesterday I discovered Korg Gadget. That’s next on the list of things to play with and looks like a great way to record inter-app sounds and mix them.
