The iPhone dominates Apple’s product sales and its balance sheet. And like a star exerting gravitational influence over its planets, many aspects of Apple’s business are perturbed by the existence of the iPhone.
When Apple reports its results, the iPhone stands center stage. When iPhone sales slip, as they did last quarter, the entire company is questioned. But we shouldn’t lose sight of the rest of Apple’s business, most notably the Mac and the iPad.
Remove the iPhone and iron out the seasonality, and what you see is a remarkably stable, successful business.
As some of we lonely voices in the wilderness keep trying to point out, Apple is a remarkably successful company even without huge iPhone sales numbers (and keep in mind, last quarter’s iPhone numbers, while lower than what Wall St wanted, are still on par with Apple’s most successful ones) and in particular when you keep in mind where Apple has come from. It really brings to the fore the fact that Apple Inc is completely different from AAPL.
Pretty sure Steve Jobs saw, and now Tim Cook sees, Sony as the best example of what to do (or not do) as Apple matures.
Personally I think a little bit of pressure on Apple is not a bad thing at this point – focus on the quality of the software, iterate on the hardware etc.

I agree that Apple is as viable as ever, but no excuse on the poor Mac performance this last quarter. With the MacPro, two and a half year old hardware sold at a premium? Really?
IDK, my ’09 and ’10 Mac Pro’s are doing fine – for now.
Tim Cook has once again said at the financials meeting that they were excited about new products in the pipeline.
I hope he dent mean watch bands.
I know, I have a 2008 with upgraded RAM, and video card. I am thinking of installing an SSD if Apple does not bring something viable for me in the near future.
As cool as the Apple Watch might be, it has not enticed me enough to go out and buy one. But I am in the market for a new workstation class desktop, so I do hope something happens with the MacPro product line.
