I can definitely relate.
My wife and I have a Windows laptop in our kitchen. First we were asked politely if we were interested in upgrading to Windows 10. Then we were reminded repeatedly. And, ultimately, we woke up one morning to see our machine taking matters into its own hands, whistling silently, while it upgraded us to what it knew we really needed.
Charming.
“Shit, the reactor is overheating. Shut it down, quick!”
“I can’t!”
“If you don’t shut it down now we’re all dead!”
“Windows 10 is installing itself!”
Boom
No worse than the “new iOS update! Let me put up two modal alerts for you to dismiss!” that can come up at awkward moments.
If you go to General/Storage & iCloud Usage then to the top Storage item (local storage) and choose Manage Storage, delete the iOS update and you’ll stop being asked to update. Not ideal certainly, but it works.
I have found no such work around for Windows 10 unfortunately.
Dave, you really should know better than to buy a Windows machine.
I should too… I bought a cheap HP machine to use as a plex server and have regretted it ever since.
Honestly I’m glad that Windows is doing forced updates. You can lead a horse to water…

This was the reason why my radio station employer had to switch out older Windows Servers to Linux servers and workstations! Then in surprising move Mac Minis for employee’s workstations!
There are people in our offices with Windows 10 upgrade prompts on domain-controlled machines, even after we’ve put in multiple group policies to prevent it from automatically appearing. Clicking on the icon reveals a splashy message about how your system administrator has prevented your wonderful new experience from happening, and could you possibly ask them about when that will happen.
Fucking sinister.
