Insanely rare video of the now iconic ballad “Purple Rain” live in 1983 at First Avenue in Minneapolis. This is the first time the song Purple Rain was ever performed live and this performance was the bare bones used on the album and in the movie.
This was Prince’s signature song. The video is fascinating especially if you watch the movie afterwards, as I did last night. You can definitely hear how the audio from this video is used in the movie. Speaking of the movie, as I said on Twitter last night, “I learned something disturbing tonight I didn’t know 30 years ago. “Purple Rain” has some classic tunes but it’s a crappy movie.” It really is poorly acted. But the musical performances more than make up for the deficiencies.
“Crappy movie”
My memory of the movie is Weird Al Yankovic using several of its motorcycling scenes and dubbing in wild screaming, as if the ride was actually crazy and exhilarating. 🙂
R.I.P., Purple One.

Re: crappy movie
I had the same, sad realization regarding the Blues Brothers when I watched it again, years later.
Thanks for the warning. I’ll avoid re-watching it.
This blew my mind. I played that album to death as a kid and had no idea that Purple Rain was recorded live. I didn’t even hear the crowd cheering until I played it again after watching this. WOW! Just WOW! He recorded it live at the first public performance and put it on the album! WOW… Did I say WOW???
Similar story to mine. I thought the crowd was added in post. Incredible that the album’s recording was taken from this one live performance.
