Using Apple Watch to control Apple TV

I thought this was a great article. I’ll give this a try later today.

  1. Pinch is right! My wife and I fight over the remote and I get pinched frequently.

So this Apple Watch Remote app will do nicely. It’s very cool.

Not sure if I can still use Siri, though. That, “What did he say?” function is so handy!

  2. I used it tonight to watch “Outlander”, and it worked well. Tapping and dragging on the watch face worked well for navigation, as well as dragging the playback head to get past the beginning title sequence. You can do fast forward and fast reverse, too. I didn’t try Siri for “What did he say?”, as the episode was too intense. But I also ob served that you can’t long press on the watch face to put the Apple TV to sleep. At first my ATV4 didn’t see my watch as a pairable device. But restarting the ATV fixed that. Overall, like with so many other things the Apple Watch can do, I love the Remote app. I don’t have to fumble around finding the remote, making sure it’s right side up, and being careful not to press the “clicker” accidentally. It’s right there on my wrist for instant access.

  4. My biggest problem with the previous generation of AppleTV has been that the connection frequently gets lost when the watch turns off. Maybe if I always had the watch at the ready, but then it’s too easy to graze it and disrupt the show.

  5. Is your grazing problem real or imagined? So far, it’s not been a problem for me, and the Watch’s advantages make it a good alternative. One thing to do, though, is to set the Watch via the Watch app’s “Wake Screen on Wrist Raise” setting to “Resume Last Activity” so that you don’t have to hunt for the “Remote” app on it.
