Appleinsider:
After an 11-year run, QuickTime for Windows is no more. Apple has confirmed it will no longer issue updates or patch security holes for the PC version of its multimedia software, meaning those who continue to use the software do so at their own risk.
Last week software security outfit Trend Micro disclosed the discovery of two new flaws in QuickTime 7 for Windows, saying Apple was informed of the security threats in November. At the time, Apple said it had no plans to issue a patch, adding the software “would be deprecated on Windows and the vendor would publish removal instructions for users.”
I don’t know what this means for Mac users (hopefully, nothing) but it’s sad to see the demise of what, for Apple, was supposed to be its next great platform. Myself and others were encouraged directly by Apple (but behind the scenes) to develop and use QuickTime. Apple sent me a QuickTime Streaming Server (back in the days when there was such a thing) in order for me to broadcast my show using QuickTime 4. But, over the ensuing years, it became obvious that Apple was losing interest in developing QuickTime much further. This issue is yet another sign of that.
As I remember, QuickTime was a foot in the door. Apple now pretty much owns the door, doorframe, and the entrance vestibule.
Since QT is obsolete on OSX as a framework (having been replaced with AV Foundation, yes?), and is just a player anymore, this should not be surprising.
It was a useful thing back in 1992 (or 2005 on Windows, I guess?), but it’s past its use-by date and deserves to be retired.
(I mean, heck, it became MPEG-4 on the video side. Gotta call that a win.)
Between how WMP has improved and the ubiquity of things like VLC, what’s the point of QuickTime on Windows or OSX?
(Bring back CyberDog!)
“Apple has yet to post an official announcement regarding the apparent deprecation…”
So: Not actually confirmed.

So, silly question I guess. But do Windows users now just use iTunes for any QuickTime videos they need to play?
I was at a seminar only a couple of weeks ago and we needed to install QuickTime on the supplied presentation laptop so one of the speakers could present her … presentation.

Sadly, this is just yet another move by Apple to divorce itself from content creators, in favor of content consumers. Why? All of the functionally of QT, at least for playback, I’m guessing will be in the HTML5 spec. Not at all sure what this portends for iMove and Final Cut, but it won’t be long before those apps will be gone as well. Apple wants EVERYTHING in the cloud, and won’t stop ’til you only own a device, and subscribe to the features that you want, all delivers from the cloud. Keep in mind, this trend has already started… as I recall, on iOS devices, there is a method to NOT download an entire app, but just part of it, and when you use it, the rest of the app is downloaded from the cloud. … or something similar… but trust me… this is what the future will be.
“as I recall, on iOS devices, there is a method to NOT download an entire app, but just part of it,” I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works.
This is what I was actually referring to… which is not what I suggested in my post, but I see this as the first wave of not owning/having/storing apps on devices….
