iTunes Allowances to end May 25, 2016

I used the hell out of iTunes allowances, but Family Sharing is a great way to share content.

  1. I use iTunes allowances too but isn’t Family Sharing completely different? I mean, I could not care less about sharing music but automatically giving our daughter money each month so she can buy music is so easy. Family sharing seems like a giant step back.

  2. Family Sharing lets parents require download requests from children, since Family Sharing comes out of the same “funds” of the parent (same credit card), I can see this being looked at as redundant in some ways.

Apple made this feature horribly obscure, few parents I met ever knew about it. Rather than killing it outright, Apple would have been better served putting it under the Family Sharing controls of the authorized parents. I think it could have been more used if it was easier to be discovered.

  3. Anybody know how to spend left over allowance money on iTunes after you go to Family Sharing?

  4. What happened if she didn’t spend it all in a month? What happened if she didn’t spend any for a year?

I can sort of see why Apple would kill this. Too many ways it could end up surprising the card holder.

  5. The money each month into her iTunes account. It’s no different than if I give her an iTunes gift card, but in this case it just automatically went in.

  6. No, how could it surprise the card holder? It’s just an automatic gift card every month. The money goes to the child’s iTunes account. A fix amount, say $20 is deposited in her account each month. No surprises..just nice and easy.

  7. I know. I was doing the same thing and then moved to Family Sharing but there is money left in both my kids accounts.

  8. Agreed. We found it by accident. Family sharing is not a new solution, Apple just doesn’t want to support it for some reason. Now we would have to issue an electronic iTunes gift card each month…which I will forget to do. 🙂

  9. Don’t call it a card. It’s not a card. That is confusing people. It’s credit to someones iTunes account.

I think they meant “a surprise to the card holder” meaning the person giving the money whose credit card get’s billed for the gift.

  10. Family Sharing was new with Apple Music. They absolutely want to support it. It’s better than the allowance because your kid tries to buy something and you get an alert on one of your devices and can say yes or no to the purchase.

This is better because you don’t have to give A SET AMOUNT IN ADVANCE.

The worst thing is approving things that are free (apps mainly) but maybe there’s a setting to avoid that.

  11. Yeah, I understand the theory of it but I don’t want to approve every song she wants to buy. Seems potentially tedious.

Before, it was nice..a fixed amount per month, either use it or don’t but once it’s gone then wait until next month.

  12. Your meant to get a Apple Music family plan. Then there would be no need to buy music. You would just need to approve apps & movies.

  13. That depends how it works, which is why I asked. Apple could choose to not charge the card until a purchase is actually made, for instance. That means that the child’s purchasing power adds up; after 10 months, they could buy something worth $200.

On the other hand, Apple could charge the card regardless of whether a purchase is made. In which case you’re throwing out $20 each month.

Either is a surprise to someone.

  14. No, you either added money to their account on an ad hoc basis or an automatic amount each month but it’s a pre-paid thing.
