Yesterday, Apple’s Environment – Answers web page contained this sentence:
Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for MacOS and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices.
Note the reference to MacOS. If you visit the page today, you’ll see that MacOS was changed to read OS X.
Back a few weeks ago, another mention of MacOS was discovered buried in some library files, joining another buried MacOS from last August.
This is speculation. But mounting speculation.
My thinking is if they start calling the next OS MacOS 11, they’re really just switching from roman numerals to arabic numerals. The only reason they used an X in the first place was to highlight that OS X is based on Unix. That’s not such a big deal anymore.
What are the chances Apple is doing more than just renaming OS X? Like maybe introducing its completely re-architected replacement at WWDC.
OS X is 15 years old. That’s about the same age as classic Mac OS when it was replaced. We might say, “if it ain’t broke,” but things like syncing problems and Discovery D and the lack of updates to many OS X apps might indicate things are a little broken.
Maybe El Capitan was a tongue-in-check way of saying that version of OS X was the cap, aka the peak, and now it’s time to scale a new mountain.

OS X is not broken and functions perfectly for us every day in a rapid and rigid production environment. Our 4 IT techs spend all of their time on Windows.

Besides matching the rest of the line up, it would distinguish it from the current Windows 10, also. Microsoft has said Windows 10 is the last and from now on it is just updates to that, so it’s probably time to lose the X/Ten from the Macintosh OS before Microsoft drops theirs.
