Vocativ:
Leading off is the Atlanta Braves, who unveiled what they’re calling the “Burgerizza” last week. This towering monstrosity of fat-saturated beef, cheese, and starch is exactly what you think it might be: a 20-ounce bacon cheeseburger jammed between two personal-size pizzas—one pepperoni, one plain—in lieu of buns.
Why not try the Sweet Spot Cotton Candy Dog, “an all-beef hot dog with cotton candy-infused mustard … topped with just enough cotton candy to make it both sweet and salty.” (Infusing mustard with cotton candy apparently turns it the color of nuclear waste.)
Some of the food pictured is truly disgusting. I’m not sure what started this gatronomic arms race but there’s no need for it. It’s a baseball game. The only food you need is a hot dog or a hamburger and a beer.
i don’t understand any of this, either.
the west michigan whitecaps are located in my hometown, and let me tell you – this is a Big Deal to the team. they pound this literally every single year in the local papers and on the local news, and if they didn’t get national recognition they’d be well and truly pissed. we’re a very silly town.
I think the food-mashup trend started with the big fast food chains. The layer of fake fries on top of the burger patty comes to mind.
For any out-of-towners who don’t know, here are some of the best food items to be had at AT&T Park in SF:
I was at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City last year on a road trip, and I was very excited to try the Pulled Pork Mac and Jack Sausage: pepperjack sausage topped with pulled pork, mac & cheese, and crumbled bacon. On a bun. BUT THEY WERE OUT. They had run out of mac & cheese.
Fat lazy food for a fat lazy game.
And here I was still happy about the emergence of decent craft beer at NJ and PA stadiums.
It’s not just baseball either–this crazy food is going to save Nascar too.
“The Big One” Meatball has a center of blended Mozzarella and Pepper Jack Cheeses mixed with smoked BBQ Pulled Pork and a little house BBQ sauce for an extra kick. It is then covered by a layer of Ground Beef, rolled in a panko bread crumb and parmesan mix before being deep fried to a golden brown. It’s topped off with a dollop of BBQ sauce and a spaghetti garnish. This mammoth meatball, like Talladega Superspeedway, is the biggest of its kind and weighs in at over 1 pound.

Don’t forget the Cha Cha Bowl out in center field!
There’s room beside the hot dog for a good poutine. 🙂
