I know a couple whose teenage son has been diagnosed with Autism. He is profoundly challenged and extremely difficult to support. Their son has an expressive language of maybe 50 words but still uses his iPad to effectively communicate his needs, moods, and entertain himself. It also gives his parents some breathing room they need each day to manage him and their household.
His mother sincerely tears up when she talks about Apple and the difference the iPad has made in their lives. They used to spend $10,000’s on other gear which was ineffective. Now the iPad is the bridge between their son and the rest of the world.
I’m a bit of gear junkie and so I update my iPad every couple of years. I give them my old iPads since they always need a backup or two. Their son can be pretty rough on gear. 😉 Also, since their son requires so much support only one of them can work – the spare iPads reduce their financial burden.
