Volvo’s North American CEO, Lex Kerssemakers, lost his cool as the automaker’s semi-autonomous prototype sporadically refused to drive itself during a press event at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
“It can’t find the lane markings!” Kerssemakers griped to Mayor Eric Garcetti, who was at the wheel. “You need to paint the bloody roads here!”
I doubt this will get fixed any time soon.
guess that means we’ll NEVER get these cars in Canada then!!!
Welcome to reality, Mr. Kerssemakers.
… self driving cars may crash onto the scene around 2025…
Uh, did they not do this on a pre-checked roadway? What the hell?
Yes, but we’ll only be able to allow them to self-drive during the period between when the lines are freshly painted, and the snow falls. In my neck of the woods, that is the month of October.
Deteriorating infrastructure? Welcome to America.
It shouldn’t need lines. If it can see the edges of the roadway it should be able to determine the width of the road and do the math.
Clearly as a image processing task, the lines are way easier if they are available. With out lines there are edges, other vehicles, road wear, etc., which isn’t even easy for humans.
