Whether it’s calling mom or ordering take-out, we rely on our phones to help reach the people and things that matter. And while mobile phones have pushed us toward the future, home phone service is still important to many families. Landlines can be familiar, reliable and provide high-quality service, but the technology hasn’t always kept up. This isn’t something that appeals to me, but I can see how it’s still important to a lot of people.
between this and T-mobile’s data only plan, I can see a lot of people dumping the traditional cell phone service.
I think this one will set a record for how quickly a Google service will be discontinued.

On a possibly peripheral note, I never experienced what what cell phones sounded like while they were still analog, but no mobile service I’ve ever experienced could match the clarity of a copper land line. And I can’t say mobile’s sound has noticeably improved since I got my first Qualcomm in 1998. Why is that?
About Google’s offering itself… I’m fairly certain every word spoken over this service will be carefully parsed, by both Google and its Federal partners.
Proof that Google will throw anything to the wall.
Strikes me as a useful tool, properly implemented. For a $10 per month premium, you get unlimited nationwide calling, and Google Voice rates for international calls. If managed properly, your home phone will ring instead of your cellphone when you are home, your desk phone will ring when you are at the office, the bar’s phone* will ring….., etc. For those who want lower cost cell packages, it may also be cheaper by moving some calls to a landline service. Add common voicemail box, and the ability to create a follow-me number when travelling internationally with another carrier’s SIM, and the value increases.
For those like me who prefer the audio, and utility of a landline and telephone device, I can see value.
