Massively speed up Time Machine backups

Mac Kung Fu:

Open a Terminal window, which you’ll find in the Utilities folder within the Applications list, and paste in the following, typing your login password when prompted:

sudo sysctl debug.lowpri_throttle_enabled=0

This command prevents Time Machine’s backup process assuming a low CPU priority, allowing backups to complete insanely quickly.

In my opinion, this should be an exposed setting. Meaning, you should be able to flip a switch in the Time Machine preference pane that says, “Go ahead and run Time Machine in high priority mode so it gets done faster. I understand that my other stuff may suffer a bit performance-wise, run a bit slower.”

Read the whole post to learn how to make this command more permanent (otherwise you have to type it in again after each reboot).

  1. Ew. No, the reason people use Time Machine is that it has no impact. Make people make a tradeoff and it’ll get turned off eventually.

Good thing to know for initial backup, though.

(So no to a switch, but maybe yes to a “Do a backup now, fast” option-click or something.)

  2. I tried this – no “insanely” quick backup to report. Just as sluggish as ever.

  3. Dave, did you try this? I would like to see some more info on this based on these first two comments. Seems like if this was true there would be some more documentation on it than this site I haven’t heard of. Not going to pass this one on yet.

  4. Yeah, no thanks. Who really cares how fast your Time Machine backups are? That’s the beauty of Time Machine, it just does its thing silently without getting in the way.

  6. I just upgraded to Sierra GM and did a backup before. It was a full backup. Without the tweak, it was estimated to take 23 hours. With the tweak it took 4 hours.
