I’m kind of ambivalent about this, to be honest. I’d rather see Apple do something else for Apple TV than to stream NFL games that are already available to watch elsewhere.
Apple won’t bid for NFL streaming rights

They should look at Soccer: Premier league, La Liga, MX, etc. They could do amazing things with that. Getting a boner just thinking about it.
Not sure how they broadcast partners handle the games, but since they’re on CBS, NBC, and the NFL network – all those entities have apps on the Apple TV already, so Apple streaming the games didn’t really make sense.
Now if it were the National Hosers’ League…
I’ve never liked the idea of Apple as a content company. So long as content companies make their content available on Apple equipment, I’m happy.
Even then, Apple wouldn’t own the content, they’d only have the right to first broadcast. They’d get more bang for the buck with other types of programming that would continue to hold value over time, especially as they’ve gotten out of the ad sales business, which would be needed for any major sports league contract.
Exactly this. NFL Network Thursday nights (and the occasional Saturday) are not enough—most NFL fans would want to follow their team on Sunday and Monday nights too. 18 games is a limited offering, and even more limited since ~half of them are available over-the-air now (and if CBS and NBC got rights for all of them, then it’s a really limited benefit).
To be honest, I’m not sure what the benefit would be for other tech firms, either.
Just keep taking their 15% from every sport on the planet that is subscribed via Apple TV.
I think the only step up from that would be to BUY the NFL and keep ALL the monies.
Apple doesn’t need to bid or own content to benefit from providing access to content. Same goes for suggestions that Apple should buy companies like Twitter.
Waste of money
