Creating backdoors, even if one agrees in one case with one government, is a Faustian pact for tech firms. Any backdoor creates a vulnerability that would ultimately hand access to users’ security not just to U.S. law enforcement, but to criminals, and to others who would take advantage of reduced user privacy. Therefore, acceding to the pressures of the FBI and NSA undermines not only the rights of all people around the world, but it actually poses grave dangers for dissidents and it creates structural flaws in all of modern commerce. The time has come to call for a global right of all citizens to privacy and security in the new digital age.
And:
Apple’s actions in this case are courageous and principled, and we believe Apple to be on the right side of history.
Nicely put.
Just as a matter of personal taste, the “right side of history” line always sounds a bit pretentious.
For anyone looking for an in-depth analysis of the legal issues, I’d highly recommend the most recent eposide of the “Law Talk” podcast with Richard Epstein and John Yoo.
What’s scary about all this to me, is how at the mercy we are to who’s running the show at these corporations. If AT&T ran Apple, they would have given up the keys to the kingdom willingly. The laws are not on on side regarding privacy.
The US Constitution is on our side. It seems the Federal government thinks the “law of the land” is only a “guide line”…
What happens to a civilization where the executive office that is supposed to “execute” laws decides it no longer needs to execute or follow any of those laws?

doesnt sound pretentious to me at all. its used in matters of civil liberties and has been accurate — minority rights, gay rights, etc.
