Dave Wiskus eviscerates Apple Music Connect:
Opening up the Connect tab of iTunes makes me sad. I see two or three weeks-old posts from Weezer and Panic! at the Disco, and not much else. I understand that the posts you see are a function of who you’re following, which leads me to my next concern: I don’t know how to follow bands.
I don’t see a follow button on iTunes artist pages. Maybe this is an Apple Music thing, and I can’t get to it because I don’t subscribe. On the Connect tab I might expect to see some kind of discovery mechanism, but no. Maybe I’m missing something.
As a fan I don’t feel “connected” to anything. I feel sad.
As I’ve said before, Apple should take a look at SoundShare. It lets you collaborate on playlists, add in songs from Apple Music, and relevant to this discussion, follow other folks and listen to what they are listening to. It’s like a Swiss army knife for music.

For me, Connect has been the new Ping. Checked it out once, didn’t bother again. I actually do like the rest of Apple Music now that I’ve subscribed.
Another failed attempt at social networking. The first question is why they even tried in the first place. The second question is why, if they are trying a second time, they didn’t put more heart and energy into it. Ownership – no on at Apple seems to take ownership of Connect.
I have absolutely no feelings at all on Apple Music Connect, which probably puts me in line with both Daves.

Unfortunately each coincidence has its end.
I may have got this wrong, but my understanding was that Connect should connect artists to fans. During the introduction they mentioned means to e.g. share lyrics, demos, video clips, tour dates etc. They never talked about any “social” aspects, and I have certainly not heard anything about individuals sharing playlists et al. So, what is the insight here? It doesn’t do what it wasn’t supposed to do? (Not saying SoundShare isn’t any good – it just seems to have zero overlap in purpose or functionality.)
The truly sour points about Connect are the concept, the naming, and the execution. The one-way-street concept is not really attractive for artists, as they can post to Connect, but have to get the feedback elsewhere. The name is wrong, because it does not connect anybody to anything. And the execution, all aspects of it (presentation, management, lack of notifications, navigation, aesthetics etc ad inf), is so poor, it makes 10 year old MySpace pages look like a thing from the future.
It is a complete failure; exactly what I expect whenever I see Mr. Cue entering the stage. And I do not really see any mean to fix something that broken. Why not start simple? Album and artist pages could at least provide links to the artist’s homepage, movie and tv show pages could at least link to IMDB etc. That would already be a 100% improvement over what iTunes is doing now (“bio” pages with pure nonsense, outdated pictures, poor copied reviews, unreliable and incomplete metadata, album pages with so many ellipses that you can’t read anything, light-gray minuscule text on medium-gray background…). They could gain a lot without any fancy nonsense that does not work,
I do miss the ability to easily share music with friends in Apple Music. Something I used to do a lot in Spotify and even Ping.
I liked seeing what others were playing in Spotify too. Though it does let me stuff without being conscious about it 😉
