Apple:
If the Ethernet connection on your Mac stopped working recently, check System Information to find out which version of “Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data” is installed. If you have version 3.28.1, you need an update. If you can connect to WiFi, your Mac will update to version 3.28.2 automatically, or you can follow the steps below to restore it manually.
It’s a relatively easy thing to check to ensure compatibility and, if not, to fix.

If so, this is a pretty unacceptable update. I’ve defended Apple’s software in the recent past, but this is awful and Apple should own up to it.
My primary (and Internet) connection is over wifi, but I got this update that broke my Ethernet connection, which I use to connect over iSCSI to a NAS device. I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out why the NAS connection wasn’t working, and ultimately had to manually download and install the fix. So it didn’t correct itself automatically in my case.
I had this problem too. Late in February 2016 hard wired Ethernet mac connection just stopped working. Obviously look at connections in a situation like that. Haven’t seen the o.s. stop working with hard wired Ethernet in 20 years. Where is apple’s source control? Did the o.s. upgrade this guy recommended on wifi. This is pretty nasty. I’m a pretty technical guy, I’m not sure the more normal users are going to like this. Still having troubles getting my Ethernet cable connection back.
