Steven Petrow, writing for USA Today:
“How did you know I was a reporter?” I asked while we started walking.
“Are you interested in the Apple/FBI story?” he responded, ignoring my question.
“Kind of. Why are you asking me that?” I thought he was some kind of creepy mind reader.
Then he dropped the bombshell.
“I hacked your email on the plane and read everything you sent and received. I did it to most people on the flight.” He had verbatim detail of a long email that he repeated back to me essentially word for word.
Pretty incredible story.
UPDATE: Via Daring Fireball, read this post from Errata security for some debunking on the above.
Good story. I like how its initial moral is to use a VPN when connected to public WiFi, but it handily shows the need for security of our devices overall. I hope a lot of people I’ve seen commenting on Failbook and other sites about this being “just one phone” or “what if it was your family” read this and finally get it.
AA & GoGo should be held accountable for for being Douchebags of the First Order. Off to the woodshed with ’em.
Funny how he tells us to download a separate secure messageing app when iOS Messages is already secure
Which leads me to believe that this is yet another piece of sponsored material.
I travel a lot so I use Cloak which works well for my laptop and iPhone. Highly recommended.
Also I use an email service which has SSL. You know, like the whole planet is using now.
