Today’s “world music” isn’t Peruvian pan flutes or African talking drums. It’s loud guitars, growling vocals and ultrafast “blast” beats. Heavy metal has become the unlikely soundtrack of globalization.

Today’s world music: Heavy Metal

World music… like Canuckistan, eh hoser?
You can say YEAH! but have you actually listened to some of the amazing, unique, endangered music that is being pushed out by Heavy Metal? I prefer a world with widest variety of music.
A slight tangent… I went to see a band called Metalachi last night. They bill themselves as the only Mariachi band who plays Heavy Metal music. I’m not much of a Metalhead, but I recognized “I Want To Rock & Roll All Night” and “Hot For Teacher.” Their instruments are electric violin, trumpet, guitarron (an acoustic bass guitar) and amplified acoustic guitar, plus lead singer. They also had a “manager” who introduced them, riled up the crowd and joined in on a couple of songs. Their costumes were a cross between metal, Oakland Raiders fans, and Lucha Libre (Mexican wrestling) costumes. Very ribald, extremely blue at times, and often in Spanish. Played to a VERY enthusiastic crowd! Check them out on YouTube, but sound quality there isn’t usually very good. There’s a couple of interview videos that are clearly inspired by Cheech & Chong and give you a good idea of their “philosophy.”
