Anti-virus pioneer, Cyber Party presidential candidate, and sometime fugitive John McAfee made a public offer to crack the San Bernardino iPhone for the FBI:
Cyberscience is not just something you can learn. It is an innate talent. The Juilliard School of Music cannot create a Mozart. A Mozart or a Bach, much like our modern hacking community, is genetically created. A room full of Stanford computer science graduates cannot compete with a true hacker without even a high-school education.
So here is my offer to the FBI. I will, free of charge, decrypt the information on the San Bernardino phone, with my team. We will primarily use social engineering, and it will take us three weeks. If you accept my offer, then you will not need to ask Apple to place a back door in its product, which will be the beginning of the end of America.
If you doubt my credentials, Google “cybersecurity legend” and see whose name is the only name that appears in the first 10 results out of more than a quarter of a million.
As of this writing, McAfee’s offer was not accepted.
His offer hasn’t been accepted because that’s not what the FBI wants.

Exactly. If they get the custom version of iOS to break into this iPhone then they’ll have set the precedent that it’s OK to do and they’ll have the tool to do it. That’s bad enough assuming that it never leaves the hands of Apple or the FBI.
And if they don’t get the custom version, they’ll go to Congress and ask for a law that gives them that because the big mean anti-American corporations didn’t do right. Director Comey is a lazy law enforcement officer passing his bad abilities on to the rest of the agency and other agencies.
Maybe he plans to hold a seance and tell the killers their phone is compromised and if they just tell him the passcode or install an app, he’ll get right in there and fix the trouble.
Not only is he talented, but he’s humble besides.
