Techinsider:
On Monday, the NHL will release NHL.TV, a new app that allows hockey fans to watch live, out-of-market hockey games, keep up with their favorite teams, and more.
NHL.TV was built by MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM), major league baseball’s tech division. It’s the same company that handles streaming video for HBO Now, the WWE, the MLB, and many others.
I checked out the app on Monday night. I’m not even a hockey fan, but what immediately piqued my interest was the new mosaic view, which allows you to watch as as many as six HD video feeds at a time. It only works on some games for now, but when it does work, it’s an awesome way to watch a hockey game.
I’ve seen some hockey fans complaining about this app (one of the issues is you can’t watch a replay of a game without seeing highlight descriptions first) but this is certainly the future for sports apps. And for sports information junkies, it’s going to get even better.
I don’t understand the headline. MLB Advanced Media creates a clone of MLB.TV for the NHL and it is somehow the first great sports streaming app? I thought it was a joke by a hockey fan, but he says he is not a hockey fan. Evidently not a baseball fan either. But MLB is right there in the name. Did he think MLBAM did’t first make an MLB app? The MLB app is the most popular sports app for years now and has all kinds of interactive overlays. It is not at all just like pressing play on some video either.
NHL has had streaming for many years now. I’ve been a subscriber since I moved overseas in 2008. Considering how much trouble the MLB streaming site gives my boss (I hear him yelling at it daily, it seems), I’m not looking forward to the transition. The old site used Flash, so I hope with the new site comes improved video quality; the old one looked nowhere near as good as it does on the iOS or Apple TV apps.
What is basis for your claim that video quality would be improved by not using Flash? Also, what tells you that the iOS app was not built using Flash and deployed with AIR? Take the Olympics apps, same app built with the Flash Platform and deployed from the same ActionScript code to both Android and iOS. Nobody complained, because nobody knew it was not native. Here goes the BS again. Meanwhile, check consumers comments on Youtube forums about the HTML5 player…. piece of sh*t is how they call it, begging for the Flash player to come back. So, again… what is the basis of your claim, other than flaunting Apple’s products? Sounds like astroturfing again…
Claim? What claim? I never made any claim that the quality would improve, I only said I hope it will.
Nothing tells me the iOS app wasn’t built using Flash and AIR. That’s another thing I never made claim to. (You REALLY need to brush up on those reading skills.)
Let me reiterate my original comment so that you might understand it this time. When I watch NHL GCL in a web browser (on any of the 3 computers I regularly use) the video quality appears to be lesser than what I get when I watch on an iPad or Apple TV. I’m just telling you what I experience. I don’t have any way to measure it, but it sure looks like the framerate is lower in the browser. It’s easily noticeable if you put them side by side.
Lastly, you’re commenting to a post on a blog about Apple. Flaunting Apple products? They’re at the heart of the discussion here.
Please lighten up, work on your reading comprehension skills, and stop being so defensive. Hell, you sound like you’re on the Flash development team and you’re taking this as a personal affront!
