A joke, as defined by this list, is a discrete moment of comedy, whether from stand-up, a sketch, an album, a movie, or a TV show.
For clarity’s sake, we’ve established certain ground rules for inclusion. First, we decided early on that these jokes needed to be performed and recorded at some point. Second, with apologies to Monty Python, whose influence on contemporary comedy is tremendous and undeniable, we focused only on American humor. Third, we only included one joke per comedian. And fourth, the list doesn’t include comedy that we ultimately felt was bad, harmful, or retrograde.
As with most lists, there will always be disagreements and even with the caveats, this list doesn’t seem as funny as you would have hoped it would be. But there are still some great, and some even could be considered important, moments included.
If you only allow one joke per comedian, it’s sheer pretense to call this list “The 100 jokes that shaped modern comedy.” Also, if you only allow one joke per comedian, why the hell NOT include Monty Python? Except which joke would you have used? And excluding everything that might later have been considered “bad, harmful, or retrograde”? Well, I looked for this headline in the list of the 100 best jokes, but I don’t see it.

A lot of great stuff in there. Like you said, there will always be disagreements. I would have found room for Stan Freberg. Especially “Stan Freberg Presents The United States of America, Volume 1”. (If you haven’t heard it, look it up. You’ll be glad you did.) And Alec Guiness’ line on 30 Rock: “Of course I’m wearing a tuxedo, it’s after five o’clock. What do you think I am, a farmer?” And there were much funnier moments from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
