Oh, Samsung

Marius Maria, writing for Android Geeks:

Back in September, Apple launched the iPhone 6S which comes with Live Photos, a feature which captures 1.5 seconds of video before and after a picture is taken. HTC’s Zoe Capture was capable of doing the same thing long before Live Photos, but this gimmick only became cool now because Apple has it on its phones.

But Samsung wants to jump into the Live Photos bandwagon, too. According to one of our sources the software engineers of the South Korean phone maker are testing a Live Photos-like feature that is supposed to debut with the Galaxy S7 later this year.

He said that the new feature is still under development and that even though Samsung plans to offer it with the Galaxy S7 at launch it might arrive later this year with a software update. As for the name, he said he heard this feature being called multiple ways, from Timeless Photo to Vivid Photo, the latter one being a combination between “vivid memory” and “photo”.

Oh dear.

  1. the stated point is Samsung copies things that Apple is doing, not that they copy things that are useful (otherwise they would have copied HTC).

flux’s color temp adjustment is a useful feature. like notifications or anything else…but because they cant open the private APIs to the app the only solution was to incorporate the useful feature into the OS.

  2. f.lux has been around a very long time. Apple has “sherlocked” many software ideas, and no one is suggesting that is not true here. Here is a link to f.lux’s response to Apple’s “Night Shift” mode: http://bit.ly/1U0vvVc. The larger issue is that Samsung usually only adds Apple-y innovations into their phones 6 months after Apple. Also, IMO, Apple really added Live Photos as an awesome use-case for 3D Touch.

  3. What nonsense. People have been changing the colour-temperature of displays for decades. Designers did it to their CRTs in the 90s to emulate printed colour gamuts. F.lux — conceptually — invented nothing.

  4. By the time it goes through the Samsung Marketing Department it will be “S-Live Compressed Photo Architecture ++”

  5. The big difference is that Apple finds “inspiration” from a multitude of places, from both large and unheard-of places. Who the hell heard of Fingerworks before Apple bought them? That’s what artists do, they find inspiration from relevant and non-relevant places. While Samsung on the other hand, relentlessly copies things from APPLE, a single source (that also happens to be the biggest, most well-known company on Earth).

I’ll even bet that the feature is activated through a pressure sensitive display. S-Touch the display to see your photos move 😉

F.lux was a small indie app that not many in the mainstream have heard of. Its unlikely Samsung has even heard of them. But now their phones will certainly have this feature, now that Apple is implementing it.

Its like some wannabe at school constantly stealing your swagger. You find new emerging trends, indie songs that no one has ever heard yet, and this wanna be is constantly swagger jacking these things from you. You might not lay claim to any of them, but you were the person with good taste that found all these things for yourself.

  6. You can call Samsung for plagiarism on many features. This Live Photo concept, OTOH, has been around in various forms for a while now. Sure, Samsung is following Apple’s footsteps in implementing it. But so what? Trying to catch Samsung for copying is becoming a yawn.

  7. You are not qualified to make that judgement. And yes, it’s obvious you’re not qualified. But that’s besides the point. Apple banned F.Lux’s app prior to releasing Night Shift. Whatever the motive, the timing is nefarious. If Samsung did the same thing, you’d be pointing fingers up their ass. You know it too.
