“We are making Beats 1 the premier free broadcast from Apple and phasing out the ad-supported stations at the end of January,” an Apple spokesperson told BuzzFeed News. “Additionally, with an Apple Music membership, listeners can access dozens of radio stations curated by our team of music experts, covering a range of genres, commercial-free with unlimited skips. The free three-month trial of Apple Music includes radio.”
iTunes Radio to be available only to Apple Music subscribers
So I’m an iTunes Match subscriber. One of the key benefits of that service for me was the ad free iTunes Radio subscription. Now I have to pay for Apple Music also? My iTunes Match becomes less valuable AND I need to pay more money for a service I was already paying for? Grrr…
That’s interesting. I’ve never been able to listen to any of those stations with iTunes Match only.
They don’t care about that. Over the last few years, Apple has taken more features out of software than they put in. It’s a lot easier for them if they just scrap everything and ship some half-assed Web-app-looking POS that doesn’t offend Jony Ives’ design professor friends. Actually meeting the needs of customers is like, actual work.
Not only that, iCloud Music Library behaves differently if you have iTunes Match vs. Apple Music. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204962
Based on reading the article, it actually sounds to me like the old iTunes Radio is actually just plain going away, and only Apple Music-curated channels will remain.
Not a real surprise, sadly; ever since Apple Music launched, iTunes Radio was limited; you couldn’t edit your existing channels, you couldn’t even see them all, just the most recently used ones.
I guess it’s good that they’re consolidating products, but it’s a bummer for those of us who enjoyed iTunes Radio. I have to decide whether to move to Apple Music (ugh) or go back to Pandora (sigh).
FUD-troll nonsense. my needs are met, I’m happy, and I think Apple software is better than ever.
you otoh constantly post hater garbage. clear troll.
what’s the ugh about using Apple Music, other than paying for it? between the canned stations and my custom, it’s just like the other iTunes Radio stations.
but if it’s the fee, then yeah. Pandora is your best option.
I found the Beats One Radio was just a Top40 internet radio, so no thanks!
Spotify is way better than either, IMO. It’ll offer you everything you’re looking for here.
I have a setup which works very nicely right now, and wasn’t ready to perturb it.
But, upon review, my best option is probably to cancel iTunes Match and switch to Apple Music. I keep my master library on my home iMac with plenty of disk space, and I’m fine with streaming on my Macbook Pro (so I don’t need iTunes Match’s ability to download the DRM-free tracks back).
Last I tried Spotify, I was extremely disappointed in their album search and selection abilities. This is particularly bad for classical music. But, admittedly, that was years ago. So I logged in again.
The good news is, it’s better. The bad news is, the album experience is still amazingly mediocre. Let’s say I search for “Beethoven,” I see a few top “songs” and then have an endlessly-long list of albums and tracks that require endless scrolling, with poor organization (basically, by date as far as I can tell). There seems to be no grid view once I’ve searched. That’s really tough.
This is way worse than my iTunes setup, where the album view is really compelling and smooth. Plus, I have a huge iTunes library, so Spotify means I’d use two apps. Third, I use iTunes with AirPlay. I guess I can use Airfoil or the system redirect, but it’s clunky.
Basically: I find Spotify is great if you want to do single-track listening, but not as much for browsing. I’ll try their radio when I get a chance.

I didn’t realize you were looking for classical music. iTunes is much better organized in that area, as they have a better understanding of organizing by composer. Hopefully Spotify will catch up there.
I’d still give Spotify a look for their radio, though. You can also build playlists and shuffle them for what amounts to custom-curated radio. I’m not big on Pandora because it lacks on-demand music. You can also import your iTunes music into Spotify so you don’t have to use two apps.
I’m considering the same move for simplicity sake, but the gap between $25/yr. for Match and $120/yr. for Music is pretty substantial. I’ve been pretty happy with Match, and I don’t think Music will be worth the $95 extra for me.
Siri integration? I know it’s not someone everyone uses, but my family does all the time.
There are a couple of shows that play some really interesting stuff that’s not on the usual playlist. The St. Vincent Mixtape show gets high marks. Now that the shows are on demand after airing (I think?) and/or playlists from the shows are available, there is much to try out.
Also, there is evidence they are creating other Beats stations with other genres covered.
me neither – beats one is the only station working for me (but i don’t mind, i just wished the other stations were not displayed as kind of permanent apple-music-ads)
I’m sure they’ve crunched the numbers on this but it seems to have reduced the value proposition of buying an iDevice. Spotify and Pandora may even be better but having those radio stations built in seemed to be an ecosystem win. Now kids (potential loyal Apple users) have to nag their parents for Apple Music or establish accounts with competitors.
I don’t see why that would reduce value of buying an iDevice. You can use Spotify and Pandora on iDevices also.
It may reduce the value of Apple Music, at least for people like me who used the radio stations as a way to discover and purchase music from bands I didn’t know. I can only guess that they weren’t making enough money from people like me.
That coupled with changes they are making to iAd have likely brought on this decision to change how their radio stations work.
If this means one less thing for Apple to concentrate on good. Just have the one station and be done with it.
If it also means trimming iTunes, that’s good too.

I think Apple should just get out of music with the exception of the iTunes store. I have no interest in subscribing to a music service. Pandora, with commercials is more than good enough for me. And I’m quite capable of creating a playlist using some or all the songs that I like and enjoy. My own personal radio station…
he spouts off nonsense to vent his anger at the world changing around him. I too think iOS 7 over did some things, but I don’t spout off nonsense such as pretending to know Apple’s motivation or pretend it’s greed driven, or to ignore user needs, etc… that’s just bitter FUD. nope, definite troll.
so because you’re fine not paying for anything on Pandora, that somehow makes good business sense for Apple to not offer a commercial service to owe willing to pay for it? hmm not following that logic…
I like paying for Apple Music. I don’t like ads, and I like buying new music immediately from it. then when I’m done with Music I’ll keep what i bought.
Apple sure doesn’t get the cloud, social media ar PR when it surrounds entertainment
After all this frenzy, I went back to terrestrial radio after many years of not listening. You know, I like WXRT in
Chicago, for personalities that aren’t over the top, playlists that are eclectic without being snobbish, and their commitment to the community.
