Tesla limits autopilot in Model S

The function will now be restricted on residential roads or roads without a center divider, meaning the car cannot drive faster than the speed limit maximum plus five miles (8 km) per hour.

I don’t know how I feel about this whole thing. On one hand they are keeping if off the freeways, but the residential areas is where kids play, right?

When Autopilot launched in October, Musk cautioned the hotly anticipated function was in beta mode, or a test phase of development, with full ‘hands-off’ driving not recommended.

Is this really the type of technology we want to launch in beta mode?

  1. Interesting – for me, I see the beta mode as critical. The amount of variables in one’s driving patterns are astoundingly vast. Then, introduce the driving habits of four or five people within the immediate vicinity of yourself. Add weather conditions, road conditions, tire conditions, mechanical part failures, and human reactions to all of the above. I don’t see these being simulated in a laboratory adequately: there are too many variations and combinations.

To me, it’s Beta or ‘not going to happen’, because a fully-functional, comprehensive live version when it leaves the lab, just doesn’t seem plausible to me. That said, I’d love to see how vast and detailed the simulation programs Tesla uses get – must be fascinating.

  2. I’m waiting to hear more about this new function that lets you summon the car remotely. Seriously? And they said that it would work between LA and NY. Really? Is the car gonna plug itself in during that journey? The future is weird.

  3. It still works as normal on freeways. It is speed capped on residential roads and roads without a divider now.

  4. Bring it on! Wish I could afford one of these. And lived somewhere that they sold them. And didn’t prefer cycling to work. But still, I trust a beta self-driving car to drive far better than most people out there on the roads right now.

  5. “Restricted on residential roads” not “Restricted to”…on the freeways it will work as it always had, but on streets where kids are playing, as it were, more limited.

“Turned off on” would probably be an even better idea based on one of the foolishness I’ve seen in some youTube videos…

  6. I think you misread this. It’s mainly for highways, since it works best where it can see lines.

  7. Anything thing automatic like this has to be used with good judgement. Possibly comparable to autopilot in an airplane, it’s only used when conditions permit, and then with constant or at least frequent monitoring by the live pilot. I use cruise control all the time, but only when other traffic around me isn’t too chaotic, or when it’s raining hard and special alertness is required.

  8. Rain is the worst time to use cruise control. It measures the speed the wheels are turning, not the actual speed the car is traveling, to determine acceleration. If you hydroplane with cruise set, you’re in big trouble.

  10. The restriction applies to roads without a center divider. On highways, where it is more reliable, it remains unrestricted. Compared to the driving I often see by humans behind the wheel, I can attest that in many circumstances autopilot is safer already than many drivers out there. That it is called a “beta” release shouldn’t automatically lead to the assumption that it is unsafe or unreliable, but simply that there are still features and circumstances where it can be improved.

  11. People fail to pay attention, yet software is horrendous… Horses are often smarter. Maybe they will get it right. It may even fail properly, in a few years.

  12. The sad thing is, it’s probably already a better driver than most of the humans I see on the road.
