One of the complaints about the (relatively) new MacBook is the replacement of Apple’s MagSafe connector with a USB-C port. A cable plugged into the USB-C port is held in place by a much stronger force, meaning a sharp tug on that cable can send your MacBook crashing to the floor.
Griffin has introduced a breakaway power cable for the MacBook. The end that plugs into your USB-C port is composed of two parts. The short part plugs into the USB-C port and turns it into a magnetic port. The long, cable end, then plugs into that port, magnetically.

They do miss the mark not infrequently, particularly with version 1.0 of a new product, even if their ardent fans refuse to concede this.
I wonder how long Apple is going to let Griffin ship something like this.
Looks silly to me. Is this really an issue with the rMB? Or are people just taking their experience with other Macs and assuming it applies to the rMB as well?
Agreed. As an rMB owner, I definitely don’t miss MagSafe — battery life is long enough that there’s no reason for me to use it while plugged in unless I’m “docked” at a desk (where breakaway isn’t needed). Personally, I would have been shocked if Apple had shipped a kludge like this.
Is the connector for Charging only? The discrption makes no mention of data throughput.

2 possible reasons:
1. Apple intends users to charge the Macbook nightly and work untethered all day, just like an iPad. (most likely)
wait — “not infrequently”…really? frequent fails? like how frequent? cuz i have a home filled with great apple gear, and i add to it annually.
not including this doesnt equate to missing the mark. theres likely good reason. such as it being an IO bus instead of just plain power. wouldnt be fun to have your huge data operation borked just because the magnet connection came lose for a second (which happens often on my MBPs)
IMO, #1 is the main reason, and is another reason why Apple didn’t ship two USB-C ports. They see the device as something that’s charged overnight and used during the day like an iPad.
Also note that, until the Smart Connector, Apple has never made a magnetic connector for iOS devices. Lightning is in many ways the opposite: a very tightly-locked connector.
