AnandTech’s Microsoft Surface Book review

If you are curious about the Surface Book, this is a solid, detailed review. As always, there’s a popup menu at the bottom of each page (above the comments) so you can jump to various pages in the review.

In a nutshell, the review is mostly positive, but you’ll still be running a variant of Windows.

  1. No real surprises. Performance is very good, and it is a very capable laptop, and a miserable tablet. The main problem for MS will be that there are ample alternatives at much lower price points – all running the same OS and the same software, many of them with professional business support options.

While we have a mixed environment (as we deal with a lot of software not yet available for Macs), we only buy Windows laptops in this price range where there is a demand for workstation replacements (e.g. units running multiple VMs or database servers, devices capable of supporting most demanding workloads like video analytics etc.). These are normally 17″ or even 19″ machines, no small laptop makes any sense there. I simply see no business case for such a device (and pretty much nobody makes professional Windows touchscreen apps, so why pay for that provision). By the time Windows might have apps that would justify the cost, this device will be long retired.
