Interactive Advertising Bureau on rise of ad blocking: “We messed up”

Interactive Advertising Bureau, on their blog:

We messed up.

Through our pursuit of further automation and maximization of margins during the industrial age of media technology, we built advertising technology to optimize publishers’ yield of marketing budgets that had eroded after the last recession. Looking back now, our scraping of dimes may have cost us dollars in consumer loyalty. The fast, scalable systems of targeting users with ever-heftier advertisements have slowed down the public internet and drained more than a few batteries. We were so clever and so good at it that we over-engineered the capabilities of the plumbing laid down by, well, ourselves. This steamrolled the users, depleted their devices, and tried their patience.

Well, it’s certainly a start.

Today, the IAB Tech Lab is launching the L.E.A.N. Ads program. Supported by the Executive Committee of the IAB Tech Lab Board, IABs around the world, and hundreds of member companies, L.E.A.N. stands for Light, Encrypted, Ad choice supported, Non-invasive ads. These are principles that will help guide the next phases of advertising technical standards for the global digital advertising supply chain.

Let’s see how this all plays out.

  1. The advertising agencies are the ones to blame! Their use of mind numbing flash adds that eat processor power when visiting web pages.

Only if advertising on web took HTML 5 instead that didn’t eat users processors and bandwidth!

  2. I like the pretty words they said, and it sounds like they’re getting the message that they’ve overstepped their bounds, but I’ll reserve judgement until I see what L.E.A.N. actually produces. Having mightily abused the public trust already, they no longer deserve the benefit of the doubt.

  3. Quite the unfortunate use of a term – Lean. Also known in many circles as “The Toyota Way” has become the siren call of hucksters everywhere. Lean is now a way for executives to say they’re doing something about productivity. But in actuality, they are simply bringing in crooked consultants (the first Management Consultant in the US was a pimp’s assistant in Paris) who drain companies dry of money while practicing their snake oil voodoo on employees who have no choice or ability to push back.

Don’t believe me? Read the book “Look Before You Lean” by Employee X. I sat two desks away from the author. I lived through it. You will be entertained as you read about how an important multinational non-profit wasted years and millions being snookered by hucksters who showed in their first presentation to the employees that they were the opposite of who they claimed to be. And yet management didn’t see it and dove head-first into a two-year process of setting us back a decade.

Sorry, that got rather long. My main point is that the term Lean has been taken by hucksters and frauds and turned into a tool to bleed millions from unsuspecting corporations who think the “Toyota Way” will save them.

It won’t. That is, if they aren’t car manufacturers.

  4. Great. Nothing to show yet, but hyperbole check, retarded acronym check, self-praise check…

Unfortunately though, they only talk about annoying content, not tracking and heavy scripts… not much hope here.

  5. Wow, that acronym is even more tortured than the ones Congress has been cranking out (USAPATRIOT still being the high water or low water mark.)
