1. Heh heh. It’s not time that freezes at all, no more than setting a beer bottle on a table stops time (the table traps the beer bottle, using gravity to prevent it from falling further toward the center of the earth under the influence of gravity).

   Energy is being put into the system at a very precise level to create the trap; if you aren’t careful, as the article notes, you will heat the system instead of cooling it. Techniques like this have been used to cool ultra-close to absolute zero for a while now. The laser interference pattern creates the trap (the nodes), and the other laser input does the cooling (which in this example robs the atoms of the energy they would need to tunnel).

   In other words, you have to know how to hold ’em, then you can cut off their escape route. What it really demonstrates is that even if we can’t explain some quantum phenomena, we can exploit how they behave.

2. Zero motion = zero time: A point of “perfection” unobtainable in the physical universe. Corollary: zero time takes you out of the physical universe.

3. so for gravity wells, time runs faster the bigger the well, but the person in the well may not notice, since their frame of reference is “the well” … so Interstellar was pretty cool in showing some of this (and a lot of other things) but I found this most fascinating….

   I think it would be interesting to see fluctuations in the big “constants”…. and maybe reality is stranger than we can ever imagine.

4. zero motion = zero time? I think that is backwards. The faster you go, the slower everything else is … the bigger you are – the closer you approach the speed of light – or you become more “massive”. If the universe were a gravity well, you could push your way out beyond this and into other dimensions, by exceeding the “speed limit”.

   The only way I could see exceeding this limit is flying (and some how living) through a singularity or passing beyond the event horizon … then, maybe you are in “hyperspace”.

   Zero motion does not “=” zero time.

   There is no time without motion. Motion creates time.

7. There is nothing backwards about it. In order for there to be time there must be motion. Time is the apparency of change of position of particles in space.

   One of the laws of thermodynamics says, in effect, that absolute zero cannot be achieved. If it is, the substance is frozen in space and time.
