Google Fiber is slowly expanding, moving from city to city, crushing the download speeds available from the traditional ISPs like Comcast and Verizon.
Here’s one example, this one sent over from Google Fiber subscriber Jesse Waldack:
That’s almost 1,000 Mb/s, which is more than twenty times the speed of my current FiOS connection. And all at a price of about $70 per month.
This kind of performance should be the rule, not the exception.

Interesting. Just today I had a 1 Gbps download/0.5 Gbps upload fiber connection installed here in Singapore. At current exchange rates it’s about US$35.70 per month. http://imgur.com/FwCR35R
You can’t compare Singapore to the US in the same way you can’t compare a mouse to an elephant. Singapore also has significantly more density and less area than anywhere in the US save NYC and has a much freer hand at using eminent domain for development than the US. This makes infrastructure updates to be much cheaper and easier than in the US.
You are absolutely right of course. I’m just sharing a couple of data points to see how and what others pay.
Do you also sign away your rights to the data that flows over that connection I wonder?? If so, I’d prefer slower and more private/safer.
That’s my concern with Google as well. Google would have to be my only option before I’d consider using their service.
Clinton gave the telecoms a tax break to add the fiber upgrade. They decided to pocket the money and give some of it out as executive bonuses. Monopolies suck. Our local City government is running fiber now. Should be complete soon.
I don’t like the stuff they are doing with tracking, but at least you can opt out. I don’t use their DNS either, but who knows what they are doing with the data. http://arstechnica.com/business/2015/03/google-fiber-tv-now-delivers-ads-based-on-your-viewing-habits/
That’s what I get too. Except divided by 1000. Yes, I get almost 1 Mb/s. For $40/month. And that’s the best I’m going to be able to get in the 5-7 year timeframe.

What a beautiful image. Like seeing the promised land for the first time.
Those speeds are awesome, being spied on by Google is not. The carrots they dangle to get your private information are getting bigger and harder to resist… The folks on this site are informed enough to make their own opinions on these offers – there are way too many who aren’t. I don’t see any of these strings attached offers as a good thing.
All the more attractive, considering how readily Verizon is dropping wireline buildout and service wherever it can, including FIOS.
Not saying I support the pricing, support etc. of the other providers, but we must keep a fundamental difference in mind: Google does not need to make a profit here (and they don’t), and knowing how they make their money, they are not a good idea either.
You really only need these speeds, if you interactively work with huge amounts of data over the Internet. I have a 200 Mbit/s line here (costing 45,- Euros per month including free landline, 35 HD, approx. 100 SD and 150 radio channels including an HD Recorder). Rendering web ages takes longer than loading them, HD movies stream instantly and download in less than 5 minutes… Should I surrender my privacy to Google, just to have a speed bump that really does nothing?
I was supposed to have Fiber installed in my neighborhood in South Austin this past spring. They are way behind schedule on deployment. My fingers are crossed that I will have it by this December.
With TCP/IP everyone signs away their rights to data that flows outside your home.. that’s how the internet works. It just underscores why it’s so important to use encrypted connections, with Google and everyone else.
The 1ms ping is what made my eyes pop. Barely any latency. Nice.
But, as others have said, maybe not nice enough considering the source.
I get about 60 to 70 Mbps.
For now, I am fine but competition is a great thing, if nothing else.I have no problems downloading or watching content.
I don’t care so much about the bandwidth as I do the latency. That 1ms is KILLER for online gaming!
But if the data point is not comparable, it’s useless. It’s like saying gasoline costs $0.91/gallon in Riyadh or $6.27/gallon in Oslo.
it would come closer to being the norm if Google wasn’t so picky about where they do Fiber.
Obviously the snooping thing is an issue, but just having Fiber around can be beneficial for competitive purposes. They’re going to be moving into Nashville soon and Comcast is suddenly bumping up their speeds.
