My daughter and her boyfriend, Ian, have had a rough month. Ian’s computer was stolen in Montreal a couple of weeks ago, and earlier today his camera gear was stolen. Nicole set up a GoFundMe page to help raise some money to buy new gear. I realize money is tight for everyone, but if you can help, I thank you.
Help my daughter
F’ing christ, stories like this and similar ones make me ashamed of my city. 🙁 Hope Ian can get most of his gear back and if he needs help in french, holler 🙂
Hmmm, I wonder if the company that you work your butt off to promote, you know, the one that has eleventy zillion dollars in the bank, might help with the computer. 🙂
No. Most unfortunate, just no.
You are asking us to fund your daughters boyfriend? really?
Sorry Jim, you can pay for your daughter’s boyfriends misfortune out of your own pocket.
yeah it’s a little weird. I helped out with the dental surgery, because it was someone connected to this site and the content. this? not so much.
I find this disappointing and bizarre. How long has it been now- years?!?- since a former tech hero of mine, Gene Steinberg, has been begging for money via e-mail. We’re all on our own, man. Rich people should contribute to the poor and sick. The rest of us have our own problems.
I find this slightly weird as well. What’s the lesson here? “You don’t need to look after your gear. You don’t need insurance. When your stuff gets stolen, just ask strangers to throw money your way”. Seemingly it works, with the target of $2k easily exceeded already.
You deserve funding if you want to build something worthwhile (a product, a company, stuff like that) that you can’t build without funding. I also get when people ask for funding when they’re sick and they can’t afford treatment.
But this? Sorry, if your gadgets get stolen, it’s your problem and nobody else’s.
That’s really weird. Not to be harsh, but I could use some new gear, too. Or a car.
It’s something else to ask for funding of a life-saving surgery, but this — no way.
People, if you don’t want to help or can’t help, just move on. No need to pass judgment.
You guys are reading way too much into this. They started a GoFundMe fundraiser like many do because it’s a good option for people of their age. Like any good Dad Jim links to it on his site; I also suspect that he thought about it for a while before posting. I was happy to give them a hand to get going again simply because I can.
If you’re weirded out by helping an individual person out then may I suggest that you also join me in supporting Doctors Without Borders.
For those complaining – this is a father helping out his daughter using whatever resources he has. If you don’t understand that, I honestly feel sorry for you.
So, just out of genuine curiosity–Now that they’ve raised $1500 more than they seemingly needed to get back on their feet, why is the page still open for “donations”?
Yeah. There’s nothing wrong with Jim asking as far as I’m concerned. People are free to give or not give. Whatever.
The complaints about this make me feel a bit worse for humanity’s future.
Because they want it to be. It’s really not that hard to figure out.
And it’s really not that hard to answer any question with that answer, is it?
I would expect getting a bit more than asked for would offset donations that didn’t come through at the last minute for whatever reason (denied credit card charges, second thought takebacks, etc.). But, that’s just my own supposition — I don’t know any of the people involved personally and they can run things however they like for whatever reasons.
I urge iPhone/iPad/Mac users turn on Find My Mac/iOS all the time!
Agreed, though I suspect my Mac Pro is too old to be able to use this feature. But everybody with a an Apple product should keep a record of the serial numbers. Then if you get one stolen you can report it at
