Today is “Vinyl Record Day”

Vinyl Record Day:

Vinyl Record Day is dedicated to the preservation of the cultural influence, the recordings and the cover art of the vinyl record, celebrating our fondest music with friends and family.

Today is the day Edison invented the phonograph in 1877. Do you remember the first (or last) vinyl record you bought? For me, it was Rush’s “Bastille Day”.

  1. Something by Billy Joel, either Glass Houses or Nylon Curtain based on when they came out.

  2. My first was either The Beatles red album or The Carpenters “The Singles.”

I love 12-inch album art, but I’ve never liked vinyl. Too fragile, especially in my hands.

I have three milk-crates-full of LPs sitting in my living room that need to be taken to a dealer that buys used records; hoping I can get something for the out-of-print stuff.

  3. My first album was More of the Monkees when I was about six, but my first Beatles album was the blue album. It was a gift for my 10th birthday. After that I saved up the money for the red album and with that my life-long devotion to The Beatles was firmly established.

  4. School’s Out by Alice Cooper. The record was wrapped in a pair of paper panties. Lesson learned, never open a rock album in front of your mother.

  5. Black Sabbath’s first album. I rarely play it anymore, it’s well worn. But I have the cassette, CD, mp3, stream… 🙂

  6. Am I (click) the on(pop)ly one (hiss) who hates vinyl?

The only thing I miss about vinyl is the convenient large size of the album cover.

  7. First one: 4 Way Street (1970 CSNY live album, bought in 1971). Last one: The Man Upstairs (Robyn Hitchcock, bought last year). On preorder: Five Years (new David Bowie box set due in September).
