Google, Samsung to issue monthly Android security fixes

Google Inc and Samsung Electronics Co will release monthly security fixes for Android phones, a growing target for hackers, after the disclosure of a bug designed to attack the world’s most popular mobile operating system.

Sounds a lot like the weekly security updates Microsoft did (do?) for Windows.

Samsung Vice President Rick Segal acknowledged that his company could not force the telecommunications carriers that buy its devices in bulk to install the fixes and that some might do so only for higher-end users.

Then what’s the point?

  1. Handing off the blame, as if Google’s somehow not responsible for also handing off the control.

  2. “But other manufacturers would wait until they wanted to update the software for different reasons before pushing out a fix” and
one in 200 phones has vulnerable software installed and they state that as “ONLY one in 200”? Seriously?

Let’s see if I have this straight. If I own a Samsung phone with Android, I MAY get an update from manufacturers if they want to, you know, for different reasons. Then they MAY push out a fix.

This vulnerability is possible even if I never downloaded something I shouldn’t download. This is unacceptable.

  3. But you know they’ll come off looking good anyway. Do no evil and all that. Is that right? I’ve forgotten.

  4. The vast number of Android users are ysing the cheapest Smart Phone that they feel they want to pay. They are the ones who are at risk!
