Still doesn’t automatically update expired cards, for me.
But if a card is expired, how could it be updated automatically? Doesn’t the cvv number change?
The cvv # is useful only to prove initial ownership of the card. It’s not used as part of the NFC transactions.

Did you read the article? The author didn’t need to prove ownership of the replacement card – in fact, it hadn’t even been stamped in plastic yet.
I did read the article. I know with AMEX at least, my CVV changed. I had to re-enter the number wherever it was used. A hassle yes, but more secure.
It depends on the card and issuer (e.g. Bank). Most of time Amex will attach the new card to your Apple Pay. Visa and MC are more difficult apparently.
The CVV isn’t stored on your phone. By entering the CVV once, you’ve confirmed possession of the original card. No reason to do so again.
