A horrible idea to be sure, but I would imagine that it comes from Asia. I know that in places like Japan, the attitude toward guns is different because they aren’t something that a normal person can own.
As an example, there is an episode of the classic cartoon Doraemon in which Doraemon (a cat-shaped robot from the future who has hundreds of magical inventions) gives the boy Nobita a “lucky gun” that has 5 lucky “bullets” and one unlucky one. The user has to put the gun up to his head and pull the trigger Russian Roulette style to see if he will have a lucky day or an unlucky one. I still think this is a questionable concept even in Japan, but clearly it didn’t occur to the creators of the cartoon that kids might find actual guns lying around the house and imitate what they saw, and it seems conceivable that the creator of this case didn’t envision the safety concerns that this case could cause.
Americans are fucking crazy. They care more about limiting people using squirt guns, toy guns, or inanimate gun shaped cases than about actual guns.
This smells like fiction. “a wave of gun-shiped iPhone cases that are gaining popularity”? I doubt it. But it makes for good SEO.
