  1. What we lost in the trend to playlists and direct listens in greater number was the great music personalities. Most folks grew up with great DJs or at least meaningful to them in their own bubble, city.

These DJs and their managers were the tastemakers. They turned us on to Nirvana, Weezer, Beck, REM and all the good and bad between. They gave us diversity in the alternative genre that gave rise to all sorts of artists after the fact.

Not that it’s in your periphery, but folks across the Washington, the States and even the world love KEXP’s John Richards show and most tune into the station specifically for his show. There are a few other areas that have them and Apple did right by having full-time and guest come in.

Radio isn’t dead, it’s just that no one has bothered to actually innovate it for the last 30 years. I’m not saying Apple has innovated or pushed the boundaries yet, but what they do get is the pure essence and history of how people connect to music. This is why they made a 24 hour radio station.

In a race for profits, the DJ and their tastes have been gutted from music stations across the world. Maybe what’s old will be new again? One can only hope so.
