Interesting that Apple is going old school on this. Since Apple already has solid data on what is popular, it seems to me this is about capturing audio snippets they can play on the air. Which is also old school. Think Casey Kasem and song request shout outs.
I tried texting to the US line and got this response:

Interestingly, the phone was not on iMessage (it was green instead of blue).
One of the Beats 1 hosts, Travis Mills, posted this tweet:

I texted a request to beats1radio@icloud.com. It is blue (as you would expect from an iCloud addy) and goes through with no response. Could be specific to Travis Mills’ show, could be a general request dropbox. I’ve not found an official mention of this address, so not clear yet who is monitoring the address.
are there automated systems that can do iMessages? I understand Apple can do with iMessages what it wants but it might’ve been faster to stand up an existing solution for the time being. Especially since they probably won’t get that many texts.
I would love if that phone number accepted Audio messages! Old school meets new school.
The female DJ at 10AM here on East Coast just did a set of dance tunes for a young girl who she had quite a long conversation with. I was, like, whaa? And then I was, like, whoa?! And now I’m , like, wow, I don’t think anyone has a clue how interesting this could be. Loving my AAPL stock right about now.
Read the Rolling Stone interview with Trent Rezner. He specifically makes it clear Apple doesn’t care what’s popular. They don’t want to go that pandering way into lowest-common denominator Clear Channel programming.
The DJ was St. Vincent and the show was wonderful.
On the show, Travis Mills kept mentioning that people can record voice messages and send them to that icloud address.

The best part was saying something to the effect of Piper never hearing the next song ‘because shes 11’. Didnt get to listen to the whole thing.

The way this usually works in terrestrial radio is that they take those request phone calls and the next time that song is planned to come up in the rotation (sometimes days later), they’ll dub in the audio of that call. Computers, of course, make this very easy to do. I guess we can be hopeful that Apple is doing something different…
