The Verge:
Sonos let its fans know weeks ago that the company’s multi-room, wireless speakers would not support Apple Music at launch. But there is some good news: we now know that Apple and Sonos are trying to make it a reality. A Sonos spokesperson has confirmed to The Verge that the two companies are working together to bring Apple Music support “before the end of the year.”
I’ve never used the Sonos system but those I know who have rave about it. Good to see they and Apple are going to work together. Also interesting to see Apple confirm this “rumor”.
I hope that Apple will also work with other equipment makers (Denon, Onkyo et al) to support their internet-enabled amplifiers etc.
Sonos is a fine high convenience low fidelity solution, I do understand why people like it, but it’s not for me.
Why is that? What about Sonos isn’t right for you? I have no interest one way or the other, just curious since I have heard good things about Sonos.
Many audio brands has AirPlay functionality built into their amps.
Main point is the selection of speakers, which is naturally rather limited. They are (to my ears) rather unbalanced and start to sound as if they are struggling to produce some depth, even at moderate levels. The other point (but that’s me being picky) is the lack of some design choices to match individual rooms.
Sure, they have a solution (for both problems) in their connect and connect:amp components (which allow for own amplifiers and/or speakers to be connected respectively), but these things are truly priced through the roof, considering neither contains anything out of the ordinary (the connect costs as much as 5 Apple TVs over here and is basically the same thing for audio only).
They can sell the stuff at these prices, because they have clever software and the stuff works. That is fine. But as long as I still need an own amplifier and own speakers (in every room) to get to the point I am happy with, there is really not much value, especially since I end up with more devices and more cabling etc.
Yep. That (plus some Apple TVs) is what I use now. The only “downside” is really dealing with multiple devices (remotes, apps, etc.). Use the music app (and others) to select and pause/play, the receiver’s app/remote to control source, volume and equalizer… it’s all rather 1980, just without turning the actual vinyl every 20 minutes.
A better solution (IMHO, of course) is the amplifier pulling content from sources, which would allow to control everything in one app. Something a push solution like AirPlay will never achieve.
